The Spencer Hills home,

Constructed in 1855 from native old growth redwood, is one of the most beautifully restored homes in Mendocino and The Joshua Grindle House, sitting by it’s side was constructed a few years later in1878. The Grindle home became the town’s first Bed and Breakfast Inn in 1975 continuing its longstanding reputation for neighborhood hospitality.

Probably the very first wedding to take place on these properties was that of Alice and Joshua

Alice Spencer and Joshua Grindle - she, the local schoolteacher and he, a logging man with the Mendocino Lumber Company were wed in 1876. We don’t know if Spencer and his wife, Aseneth, gifted the property to the newlyweds on their wedding day or if it was just too much family under one roof, but the next year construction began on a new house for Alice and Joshua, just a stone’s throw from the in-laws.

At the time,

The two homes were surrounded by 250 acres of open land, grazed by beef cattle and later, in 1909, the property became a dairy farm - we think this hundred-year history of “organic fertilizer” is what makes the soil able to produce our outstanding gardens! Amazingly, the Spencer Hills property changed hands only twice in over one hundred and fifty years, but eventually the surrounding acres were divided into parcels and developed – now including our historic and peaceful cemetery, deeded open space and the site of our fire department!
